Lots Going On At RMMA

November 12th, 2009

Hey everybody,

Thought I better post a quick update of some of the latest news from Springfield’s best MMA School.

First of all, congratulations to all of our guys who fought and won in the last Capital City Cage Wars. There’s no better publicity than going 4 and 0 at the real deal and cleaning house. If you want to train to fight, this is the place to be.

Again, way to go guys, you made us all proud!

But lets not get carried away patting ourselves on the back. We have 8 more guys ready for a fight around the corner in Peoria on November 21. I’ll post a link to some info as I find it. A lot of these guys are heading out for the first time in the cage. I’m sure they’re going to raise a few eyebrows when our guys making their maiden voyage are looking like some seasoned veterans. Justin, Mark, and Ryan are leading our fighters and a gym full of good training partners to another impressive showing I’m sure.

Right after – and I do mean right after – our humble gym is ready for expanding already and will be leaving Jefferson behind for more space and more visibility on West Wabash. We’re moving just west of the Culvers and Buffalo Wild Wings on West Wabash at the end of November. Justin and company are working their asses off getting it ready to go. I’ve been by a couple times, and it’s gonna be sweet.

Finally – for now anyway – Justin will be preparing for a King of the Cage title fight in Japan in January of 2010. Be looking for a training blog and some pics of all the past events coming soon.

Taking the back with pressure on the neck

May 11th, 2009

Another great class tonight. Joey Walters is back from school and will be welcome additions to the team over the summer.

Mark’s going over some cool stuff both escaping from the back and taking the back. We’re also going over some cool self defense takedowns. As always each technique that we go over recaps the fundamentals of the different positions that we’re working.

One of tonight’s techniques was what to do when you have some brute laying his elbow across your throat and putting all his weight on you. You use your guard to create space and relieve the pressure, then when he heaves back, you pop the elbow to the opposite side and clamp down some kind of arm triangle almost.

Then you escape your hips out – guard is closed up to this point – and kick his knee straight back if you need the space to put your foot in. After your foot is inside, plant it down to use it to lift yourself up, grab his lat, post to your elbow that’s underneath and move to take his back and sink in the hooks.

I’m still trying to focus on each new technique through the lens of controlling space and my opponent. I’ve been trying to use better leverage – feet on the hips, and knees together – as well as grips and seeing each battle for grip control as a match of its own.

Andre Ushirobira

May 3rd, 2009

After getting my ass kicked by Andre Ushirobira for the last couple days, I’m going back to some pretty basic stuff.

Things like closing and controlling distance, staying tight, and grips are some areas where I think I can really improve my game.

Andre and I went over some awesome spider guard techniques and drills. We also looked at some ways to build on the basic arm bar and triangle.

At first I couldn’t believe that given the opportunity to work 1 on 1 with someone of this caliber I was asking about arm bars, but afterward, I’m glad I did.

Andre did a great job listening to my questions and gave me great answers to why I was having problems finishing – especially with bigger guys.
